In 2020 we began working with Nebraska farmer Steve Tucker to grow regenerative sorghum for our pretzels. After nearly two years since meeting Steve we are very proud to be trialing his sorghum in our products this spring. Working directly with a farmer has been a long journey with lots of learnings along the way. We’ve dealt with extreme weather ruining the crop, learning how to harvest to meet our spec needs, and had to search for the right processing partner. Overall we’re excited about how this project will help us move forward with direct sourcing other ingredients and will improve the traceability and environmental impact of our sorghum.

Our biggest challenge goes back to our regenerative sorghum project. Commodity markets make it difficult for small brands like us to work directly with farmers, especially with conventional grains. It’s much easier for us to work with established ingredient suppliers, but often we don’t have much visibility into where and how those ingredients are grown. As we continue to grow and launch new products we’re constantly facing the challenge of finding ingredient suppliers that support our mission or working directly with farmers to meet our processing and spec needs.

As a small team Latis has helped us immensely with our R&D process. Before Latis we’d spend hours researching the various impacts of certain ingredients. Even if we could find helpful data it was difficult to put in context. If one source said an ingredient was great for water use, but another said it required high levels of harmful synthetic inputs, how should we move forward? With Latis we quickly get a holistic view of ingredient impact that can guide sourcing decisions. We’re able to quickly understand and validate the impact of ingredients and integrate sustainability decision making into earlier stages of our innovation process.

As we continue to learn more about the impacts of industrialized food we predict more brands will start looking to do the right thing where they can. To build a better food system we need change to happen at a faster pace than the past few decades and we hope to see more brands committing to take even just the first steps to improve their environmental and social impact. At Quinn we’re strong proponents of progress over perfection and hope we can inspire and support other brands just beginning on their sustainability journeys. As we continue to learn more about the impacts of industrialized food we predict more brands will start looking to do the right thing where they can. To build a better food system we need change to happen at a faster pace than the past few decades and we hope to see more brands committing to take even just the first steps to improve their environmental and social impact. At Quinn we’re strong proponents of progress over perfection and hope we can inspire and support other brands just beginning on their sustainability journeys.

Quinn was started with the vision of making the world better for our farmers, our communities, and our families for generations to come. We believe the only way to achieve this vision is through regeneration. With the effects of climate change already being felt by many communities around the world, including in our own Boulder community where we’re still reeling from the most destructive wildfire in state history, we know we need more than simply sustainability. To make the world a better place for future generations we need regeneration, not only for our environment but also for our communities.
