Frequently asked questions

What is the CSRD?

Under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), passed in April 2021, food and beverage companies are required to report detailed information on their environmental and social impacts. This includes metrics on resource use, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity impact, and sustainable sourcing practices, as well as social aspects like labor conditions and community engagement. Companies must ensure their reports are comprehensive, accurate, and aligned with EU sustainability goals. The importance of data accuracy and auditability is crucial, as these reports will be subject to external audits and can affect investor trust, regulatory compliance, and brand reputation.

What is HowGood's solution for CSRD reporting?

As sustainability experts for the food industry, HowGood is a trusted data provider for some of the most challenging environmental requirements of the CSRD. This includes the quantitative data requirements for ESRS E1 (Climate Change), which is the only standard currently required under the Environment category.

In 2025, HowGood will be aligning our existing reporting metrics for Water, Biodiversity, Pollution, and Circular Economy to the specific requirements of the CSRD as well.

While HowGood is not a comprehensive CSRD reporting tool, we partner directly with the leading platforms for CSRD reporting, including Watershed, IBM, and Salesforce, to power the sustainability data needed for these requirements.

What makes HowGood's CSRD solution unique?

There are three areas where the accuracy and audit-readiness of HowGood’s data will support CSRD reporting requirements:

  • Quantitative data requirements:
While comprehensive CSRD platforms offer critical support for aggregating and automating data collection, many cannot provide the quantitative data required to comply with CSRD. As the world’s largest food sustainability database, HowGood houses the value chain impact data required, with a level of granularity and accuracy that is unprecedented in the food industry.
  • Mandate for Trust, Transparency, and Quality:
The CSRD specifies high data quality and auditability requirements. With HowGood’s background in enterprise-level carbon accounting and product footprinting, we ensure data accuracy and quality at scale for the most challenging environmental reporting categories. All calculations are audit-ready and aligned to the GHG Protocol and ISO 14067, and HowGood’s product footprinting methodology is certified by the Carbon Trust.
  • Third-party assurance:
The level of transparency and substantiation that HowGood provides will ensure that reporting companies are assurance-ready. All reports include full methodologies and data sources, and all of HowGood’s metrics are in line with leading sustainability reporting standards >> learn more at https://www.howgood.com/research-methodology
